Un Palazzo in esilio
Un Palazzo in esilio (A Palace In Exile) is the third chapter of the Transmundane Economies project by Theodoulos Polyviou. In the 1950s, amidst the ethnically and nationally charged atmosphere of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III spearheaded the construction of a new Archbishopric Palace. This competition, along with the public debate surrounding it, highlighted the role of architecture in national identity during British rule and set a precedent for the island's architectural future.
The exhibition serves as a dialogue between real and speculative histories surrounding the competition. Employing video, sculpture, drawings and installation, it examines how mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion within the construction and symbolism of the palace fostered a sense of community and belonging, while simultaneously marginalizing Cypriot minority groups through sidelined narratives.
