EXPOSURE. Art, culture, fashion in and out of the showcase
Katya Inozemtseva, Sara Rizzo
Introduced by Theo Eshetu's special intervention Crocodile on a ceiling in the rooms of the Permanent Collection, the exhibition Exposure reflects on the traditional concept of the vitrine and its centrality in exhibition projects. The display case both exposes and separates the object and, particularly in ethnographic museums, its ‘neutralising’ effect affects the works, isolating them and depriving them of their original context and function.
The section on the history of the vitrine in classical museum displays is followed by one on its role in the world of the retail store. A focus on the display case in contemporary art practice and a new installation by Monia Ben Hamouda (1991) close the programme. Artists: Monia Ben Hamouda, Mark Dion, Sam Durant, Theo Eshetu, Damien Hirst, Candida Höfer, Giancarlo Iliprandi, Gene Moore, Roberto Sambonet, Albe Steiner.
